Metro service: boon or bane?

Letter March 19, 2015
The Metro Bus service has, rather, become a daily bliss for pickpockets as buses are always found jam-packed

LAHORE: The PML-N has been in power in Punjab for years. This amount of time is quite enough time for a political party to conduct development work and significantly improve the lives of the people it is supposed to be governing. But it is sad to see that the PML-N government has not done any worthwhile work save for some scattered projects involving billions of rupees from the public kitty. Right from the failed sasti roti scheme to the much-hyped multibillion-rupee Metro Bus service, there has been no project which has served to empower the people of Punjab economically.

The Metro scheme in Lahore was claimed to be a great initiative in the province’s developmental history. But it has turned out to be a bane for members of the hapless general public like me who have no other option but to make use of transport that is cheap. The Metro Bus service has, rather, become a daily bliss for pickpockets as buses are always found jam-packed due to the great rush of the commuters. Many of my friends have lost their mobile phones and wallets while travelling on the bus service. It is only helpful for those who want to travel from the Gajjumata area of Lahore to Shahdara or vice versa. It is totally useless for those who do not have to travel great distances. The buses have too many steps, which are too steep for these people to negotiate easily. I request the Punjab government to look into these issues as the service, at the moment, just seems to be a waste of good money and is helping very few people.
