Reforming the UN

Letter March 14, 2015
It is also important that the UN is made a more democratic forum where all countries can bring forth their problems

HYDERABAD: The main purpose of the UN is to reconcile confrontations between countries before they resort to war. In a world filled with belligerent and war-mongering dictators, the UN has failed to stamp out terrorism due to its debacle in balancing the twisted ideologies of the P5+1 bloc. The UN, over the years, has been inept in the true sense of the word.

Countries like Russia, Israel, India and the US have violated international law, but the agony is that they have never been brought to book. The UN has been reduced to being a forum that serves as a ‘breeding ground’ for sponsoring pre-emptive strikes in various parts of the world. In the wake of the US-Russia schism, the veto power that countries on the Security Council have has created a stumbling block in the way of world peace. As the world is in the clutches of a few dominant powers, the restructuring of the UN has become important. The frequent abuse of the veto power by some of the P5 needs to be neutralised by increasing the number of quasi permanent members of the Security Council. Binding recommendations must be exercised by all agencies of the UN. It is also important that the UN is made a more democratic forum where all countries can bring forth their problems and be assured of getting a remedy for them.
