A reading culture

Letter March 14, 2015
Decline in book-reading culture is a bad omen for a society which needs to be more educated, tolerant and pluralistic

KARACHI: Reading has, at all times and in all ages, been a great source of knowledge. It improves our thinking process. However, one can observe a huge decline in reading habit in the past few decades as books have been replaced by cell phones, computers, tablets etc. Some of the reasons for this decline in reading habit are the growing use of internet and television, lack of proper education and the lack of a reading culture in schools and universities.

The decline in book-reading culture is a bad omen for a society which needs to be more educated, tolerant and pluralistic. There is a need for a prompt response by the authorities concerned to address this crucial issue and revive this culture again. Perhaps, making books more affordable can be a positive first step in this regard.
