Most streets and roads are usually flooded with unhygienic gutter water every other day
SUKKUR: This is with reference to the nascent cleanliness campaign initiated by the government of Sindh. It is saddening to see the ever-worsening municipal conditions of my city, Sukkur. Most streets and roads are usually flooded with unhygienic gutter water every other day. For almost half of every month, we have to suffer from this trouble. The rubbish in the city, particularly plastic shopping bags and polythene bags, which are not removed in a timely manner by the municipal administration, slowly drifts away into the open gutter lines, blocking them. Consequently, this blockage thrusts the gutter water onto the roads, blocking the passage for pedestrians. This has created a highly unhygienic and unhealthy atmosphere for the residents of the city, particularly those residing near Nishat Cinema, Old Sukkur, Military Road and Bhutta Road.
A few days ago, when I set out for my college in the morning, I found that the street in front of my house was flooded with dirty sewage water. I had to pull myself back and restrict myself to my home for a whole day. The loss to my studies may be covered, but the continuous lethargy of the quarters concerned remains appalling. It seems as if the Sukkur Municipal Administration is in deep slumber over the issues of cleanliness, preventing gutters from overflowing and removing trash. I request the municipal commissioner of Sukkur and the provincial minister of local government to take serious notice of the work, or the lack of it, being done by sweepers, who are not performing their duties and causing problems for citizens.
