Back to 1992

Letter March 11, 2015
With current performances of the national team, we may just hope that Pakistan may be able to bring back the World Cup

ISLAMABAD: The ongoing ICC World Cup 2015 evidently strikes a similarity with past World Cups for Pakistan, especially the 1992 World Cup. Few of the similarities include the risk of playing a new wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed instead of a specialist opener Nasir Jamshed, and an uncertain opening pair etc. Moreover, in 1992, Pakistan lost to the West Indies and India and beat Zimbabwe. This incidentally coincides with the happenings of the 2015 World Cup.

New Zealand evidently seems to be contenders for the next round of the World Cup and there are chances that Pakistan may face them some time during the course of the knockout stages. This happened in the 1992 World Cup too. With three straight wins after losing to India and the West Indies, Pakistan have inched closer to reaching the quarter-final. We had more or less a similar situation in the 1992 World Cup too. Even the venues of the 1992 and 2015 World Cups are the same. With the current performance of the national team, we may just hope that Pakistan may be able to bring back the World Cup against all expectations.
