The localitly of Kacho is the worst-affected area where rare types of trees continue to be cut down
JOHI: Not long ago, in Sindh, both sides of roads and water canals in cities and towns were lined with trees. But now, many roadsides and edges of water canals stand devoid of them. For the last two decades, forest land has been deprived and is still being deprived of thick tree cover. Instead this land is being used for cultivation and for providing fuel for the ever-increasing demand of brick kilns. While land is deprived of tree cover, there are no activities initiated to plant trees to compensate for large-scale tree-culling sprees. The localitly of Kacho lies on both sides of the River Indus and is the worst-affected area where rare types of trees continue to be cut down and consequently many kinds of fauna have disappeared.
There would be no better time than the coming spring to start tree plantation drives on a large scale. I am happy to see the PPP Johi chapter and a Dadu-based NGO, Sujag Sansar, launching tree plantation campaigns in my home district.
