An expanded World Cup format?

Letter March 08, 2015
If 25 teams will feature in the mega event then it will surely globalise the sport

KARACHI: Cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar has very rightly said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should expand the next cricket World Cup to 25 teams instead of reducing the number. If 25 teams will feature in the mega event then it will surely globalise the sport. Tendulkar also suggested that Test-playing nations must send their ‘A’ teams to associate cricket countries to give the latter some much-needed experience. However, reports suggest that the ICC wants that the next World Cup to be played along the lines of the 1992 one when all nine teams played against each other before the semi-final stage. But the Champions Trophy already has that kind of format and Tendulkar’s suggestion makes sense.

I hope the ICC will take the appropriate decision after considering all options and discussing the matter with former cricket greats, cricket boards and also with associate team cricket boards.
