ISLAMABAD: I wrote this with reference to a report in your newspaper by Sehrish Wasif titled “No refuge for women with AIDS” (December 1). I think what it is saying illustrates, in general, the discrimination that women face in a country like Pakistan. However, I want to be more specific.
The prime minister, who leads a government of a party that is supposedly liberal and women-friendly, announced a cash reward of Rs40 million for the men’s hockey team which won a gold medal at the Asian Games. However, the reward that he announced for the women’s cricket team was a mere fraction of the amount given to the hockey team. Why this discrimination when both the men and the women had won gold medals, which brought the country honour and prestige in equal measure?
