Security of libraries

Letter February 14, 2015
Despite being a significant public library, it lacks security and this could be risking lives of many students

ISLAMABAD: The educational institutions of Pakistan seem to be the targets of terrorists after the Peshawar school attack of December 16, where terrorists martyred well over a hundred students and teachers. The government has taken initiatives to tighten the security of schools, colleges and universities across the country, which is a good initiative in order to ensure security of our educational institutions.

One must remember that public libraries are also vulnerable since students go there to study, and most of these libraries have very little security. The Allama Daudpota Library in Hyderabad, which is the only public library of the city where plenty of students go to conduct their research work in various fields daily, could also be vulnerable. Hundreds of students come to study in this library on a regular basis. Despite being a significant public library, it lacks security and this could be risking lives of many students.

I request the authorities to ensure the security of this library so that students can use this library in a peaceful atmosphere. Moreover, the Hyderabad administration should take initiatives to introduce latest technologies in this library so that students can access scientific paraphernalia, which is updated according to the needs of the time. Education authorities of Sindh are requested to visit the library in order to encourage the students and address their fears.
