Corruption at universities

Letter February 08, 2015
I request the VC of the IUB to carry out audits of the institutions’ finances so that transparency is maintained.

RAHIM YAR KHAN: It is indeed our bad luck that the prevalence of corruption, especially in educational institutions, is soaring. I was shocked to read the news item about the recent scam of Rs6.5 million in the treasurer office of the Islamiya University of Bahawalpur (IUB) through fake signatures and a fake bank account. I remembered the days when I was a student of MSc (Physics) at this institution. It was very hard for my parents to pay my semester fees and other university dues. Whenever my batchmates asked the university authorities about the increasing fee, they simply used to reply that “the university has to meet its expenditures through students’ fees”. One wonders where our parents’ hard-earned money was going.

Universities are fleecing poor people. Parents today are already finding it difficult to make ends meet because of the soaring inflation. The unjust increase in university services, coupled with the pocketing of this hard-earned money, is a great disservice to the parents and the students. If the university authorities succeed in curbing such corruption, I hope the expenditures can be controlled and the students’ fees can be reduced. I request the vice-chancellor of the IUB to regulate the university’s expenditures and also carry out audits of the institutions’ finances so that transparency is maintained.
