Cancer hospital in Islamabad

Letter February 06, 2015
Instead of spending on a new facility, I strongly urge attention is directed towards upgrading, modernising NORI

ISLAMABAD: The Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI) in Islamabad, set up by the Atomic Energy Commission, has been in existence for several decades and is providing excellent service to poor patients of not only Islamabad but many other districts around the capital. The NORI is providing very valuable service, particularly to the poor who cannot afford the high charges that many private hospitals extract from their patients.

I have personal knowledge of this hospital, which is under severe financial strains due to poor funding by the government. Despite limited funds, I know of several people who have received excellent attention and treatment at the NORI by its dedicated doctors and staff.

NORI has the basic infrastructure, machinery and equipment although all this is old and requires urgent replacement and a trained staff. It is also well located. Instead of spending large amount of funds on a new facility, I strongly urge that attention is directed towards upgrading, modernising and expanding the facilities of the NORI. The work can be completed in 18 to 24 months if serious attention is given and funds provided.

I am 77-years-old and have survived two bouts of cancer due to timely detection and treatment. I can understand the misery and helplessness of cancer patients, who have no access to a well-equipped hospital in the area. I strongly urge the decision-makers in Islamabad to give serious attention to my suggestion.
