Battling unemployment

Letter February 04, 2015
I think its a national duty of all big companies to give youth opportunities enabling them to make use of themselves

ISLAMABAD: I think all of us who have an opportunity to commute from our homes to work every morning are very fortunate. Most, including myself, throw their hands in the air and complain about the long routes, daily traffic congestion and fuel costs. But if we pause for a moment and reflect, there is a silver lining to this cloud of ‘misery’. We all have somewhere productive to go in the morning, where we can make use of ourselves. I have something positive to think about, which I would like to share in the wake of all the troubles in society, myriad economic issues, political unrest and the security situation. When I go to my office, meet my colleagues and make a day productive for myself and society, I am utilising my potentials as a human. I am feeling better. I am feeling good. But what about those people who are jobless? What do they do with their day, with themselves? Today, I realised how stifling the problem of a lack of jobs is for our youth — especially those living in far-flung areas of the country.

This thought occurred to me as I came across recent news about an internship programme of a leading telecommunications company. The company hires interns in hundreds, trains them, pays stipends and on successful completion of the internship term, even offers jobs to the internees. In simple words, this means hope for hundreds of youth. I think it is a national duty of all big companies to give our youth opportunities, which will enable them to make use of themselves instead of wasting their talents.
