Encroachment on Hyderabad streets

Letter February 02, 2015
Roads, once designed to withstand the traffic of heavy vehicles, are no longer wide enough to let even motorbikes pass

HYDERABAD: It is a pity that Hyderabad, being the second-largest city of Sindh, and an important trading hub of the country, lacks basic facilities, such as effective drainage systems, strict enforcement of traffic laws, properly constructed roads, etc.

Being a citizen of Hyderabad, I am filled with sorrow when I compare this city with other cities. Something of special concern is that the development in the Qasimabad area of Hyderabad is in complete doldrums. The roads, once designed to withstand the traffic of heavy vehicles, are no longer wide enough to let even motorbikes pass. The main cause of this is the encroachment on the streets by people who have pitched fruit stalls, vegetable carts and other shop stands. Unfortunately, nobody is ready to take action against these encroachers. It is my request to the higher authorities of the Sindh government to take severe action against these encroachers as soon as possible so that the people can use the streets that they pay taxes for.
