Civil society should question wisdom of keeping CII, seek its abolition since it failed to respond to need of the time
BHAKKAR: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) is leaving no stone unturned to make women’s lives more miserable. In 2013, it said DNA results should only be considered as supplementary evidence in rape cases, however, in many judgments of the Supreme Court, it is used as primary evidence.
Now it has said that three pronouncements of divorce should be criminalised, and they would have no effect on the dissolution of marriage, which could be bad news for women seeking to escape difficult relationships. This would only sow the seeds of uncertainty as the Muslim Family Law Ordinance, 1961 already provides a procedure for divorce, which now seems to be contradicting the recommendations of the CII. The civil society should question the wisdom of keeping the CII and demand its abolition as it has failed to respond to the needs of the time and only aroused outrage.
