Justice for juveniles

Letter January 16, 2015
Unfortunately, in the unjust society, there is little regard for wellbeing of children, especially street children

ISLAMABAD: It has been pointed out repeatedly in various workshops and seminars at the national, provincial and local levels that like other systems, our juvenile justice system is encumbered with abuses and mismanagement. The needs and rights of juvenile convicts are violated at every turn.

Needless to say, this is wrong: the treatment of young people must be guided by compassion, common sense and logic rather than through polarising rhetoric, politics and ethnic considerations. Unfortunately, in the unjust society of today, there is little regard for the wellbeing of children, and especially street children, who are often thrown in jails on the slightest of pretexts.
