Markets, like the Urdu Bazaar in Karachi, serve as a hub for plagiarised and pirated material
KARACHI: The government of Pakistan loses billions of rupees in revenue every year due to the thriving piracy business. Markets, like the Urdu Bazaar in Karachi, serve as a hub for plagiarised and pirated material on different subjects, like engineering, medicine, commerce, accounting and literature. The major cause of widespread book piracy in Pakistan is the high prices of international books, which are beyond the reach of most students. Therefore, books are photocopied and sold in local bookshops. Pirated books end up being a blessing due to their low prices and easy availability.
To eradicate piracy and overcome copyright issues, the government needs to take steps, which can ensure the provision of foreign books in their original form at low prices in the country.
