In defence of the armed forces

Letter January 12, 2015
People of Pakistan should stand informed that some hidden hands are assiduously working to belittle military’s image

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s armed forces have been a source of some controversy during the past few decades. The criticism that they have received is partly because of their own doing and partly because of the ulterior motives of politicians and the naivete of the people of this country. Out of the 68 years of Pakistan’s existence, almost half of the time the country has been under military rule. The main reason why the military chose to do this was the failure of the civilian politicians to effectively rule the country. On the other hand, as vividly known to all and sundry, politicians, due to their infighting and intrigues, have always created situations where a military takeover became inevitable and justified.

In this tug-of-war for power, particularly during the past five decades, the image of both the pillars of the state stood badly tarnished and the country suffered immensely. Even today, it seems we haven’t learnt anything. For personal benefit, it seems politicians on both sides of the political divide are hell-bent on maligning the military. To attain their political goals, they are willing to go as far as possible, without realising that this attitude has caused serious harm to the country and the military.

People of Pakistan should stand informed that some hidden hands are assiduously working to belittle the military’s image. Regardless of who is responsible for tarnishing the image of the armed forces, the fact remains that under no circumstances this extremely vital institution be subjected to criticism.
