As night falls, criminals play havoc, taking advantage of the darkness
KARACHI: I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned towards the lack of operational streetlights in many areas of Karachi. This is turning out to be a major problem for citizens, as there is a significant rise in street crimes in general and cellphone snatching cases in particular, in areas where streetlights are not working. Some of the installed streetlights on main Abul Hasan Ispahani Road (from Safari Park to Maskan Chowrangi) are not illuminated and have been dysfunctional for the last couple of weeks.
Muggers have an ideal location where they can rob people of their valuables. As night falls, criminals play havoc, taking advantage of the darkness. I am quite sure that many people are not even bothered to register their complaints of being mugged as there is a severe distrust of the police. I had filed a complaint via the KMC website on December 29, 2014 and got a complaint number but no action has yet been taken to resolve the issue. I hope and that the authorities will look into the matter as dysfunctional streetlights in the city are putting people’s lives and belongings at risk.
