Drug addiction and our youth

Letter January 08, 2015
Our future aimlessly wanders on the streets, or is sprawled across railway lines, in pursuit of drugs

RAWALPINDI: Drug addiction has become a major social problem. Drugs are substances that alter the human body, change the individual’s mood and affect behaviour. Taking drugs can be extremely injurious to health as it ruins the very existence of man. Drugs undermine sustainable human development and can induce man to indulge in criminal activities.

Using drugs even temporarily can put the user on the road to ruin. The treatment and rehabilitation period can be stretched to months and even years. More importantly, the patient’s psychological need for drugs may never diminish and an infinite battle may begin for the rest of his/her life. This is a grave problem that young ones — the resources of our future — face today. Our future aimlessly wanders on the streets, or is sprawled across railway lines, in pursuit of drugs. The state of affairs is indeed quite dismal.
