Shouldn’t media focus on educating people about how to become better citizens than personal lives of politicians?
ISLAMABAD: The media is abuzz with stories of PTI leader Imran Khan getting hitched with TV anchor and former BBC anchor Reham Khan. While we, as Pakistani citizens and political observers, can have an opinion on this news, what is really perturbing is that the media in Pakistan is giving priority to this news over other important political and national news.
I understand that the public in Pakistan is hungry for entertainment and wants to know everything about the personal lives of our celebrities, whether they come from the entertainment industry or politics, but isn’t it time the Pakistani media matured and gave prominence to news that matters? We love to criticise and scrutinise the personal lives of the high-and-mighty in our beloved country, but it is worth mentioning that Pakistan, in the recent past, has gone through a bitter and tragic period. I hope people still remember the Peshawar tragedy and the looming threat to all educational institutions given by TTP commander Mullah Fazlullah.
Shouldn’t the media focus more on educating people about how to become better citizens than giving space to what goes on in the personal lives of our politicians? I am sure Mr Khan would heave a sigh of relief if the media left him alone.
