New year, new hopes

Letter January 02, 2015
Every year, oaths are made by each of us, but how many of us abide by them for the whole year?

RAWALPINDI: Another year has gone by and the country continues to bleed. The people of this country look forward to the rays of hope in the coming year. As the clock ticked on New Year’s Eve, people decided on their yearly resolutions. Some of us promise to be obedient to parents, others decided to be more committed towards their careers or family. Everybody announces some promise they made.

Our politicians already make lots of promises to us. What new promises can they possibly make? They tell people about their faithfulness, prosperity, security and well-being. But just like the politicians, we common people also break our promises. Every year, oaths are made by each of us, but how many of us abide by them for the whole year?

Now it has become a habit to make yearly resolutions and break them the next day. The year 2015 will be no different from the years 2010 and 2011 and all the recently passed years. People will make new promises but they will not fulfil them because now, a resolution is not a vow; it is merely a custom that does not hold any importance. Meanwhile, the democratic government of the PML-N, like all other governments, is planning to make new promises. But what change will this result in? The police will continue to harass people, roads will continue to be blocked for VIPs and our streets, markets and households will continue to be ransacked by criminals and thieves.
