Sharif, Sharif and us (V)

Letter December 26, 2014
First things first, we need to immediately tackle the monster of terrorism

LONDON: In war-like situations, the military of any state tends to gain more power than it otherwise would in times of peace. And there is nothing wrong with that, in fact, that is something to be expected. We should not mind this happening in the case of Pakistan right now either because in General Raheel Sharif we seem to have an army chief who is ready to take on the Taliban, in the way that a soldier would and should.

Yes, the strategic depth policy and non-state actors remain the elephants in the room when we talk about our security policy. However, it would be naive to expect things to improve on all fronts in the short term. First things first, we need to immediately tackle the monster of terrorism. The rest can follow in due course of time.
