Terrorism in Pakistan

Letter December 17, 2014
Blanket accountability is perhaps needed in all spheres of life if we want to extricate ourselves from this mess

NAUSHEHRO FEROZE: Out of 162 countries included in Global Terrorism Index (GTI), Pakistan stands at the third place. This is really bad news. After being among the only three countries where polio is still endemic, we have now reached new ‘heights’. If circumstances remain the same, we have a bright chance of replacing Afghanistan’s place in the GTI, with the brutal attack on the school in Peshawar perhaps a step in that direction. This is an eye-opener for all of us. Through terrorism, we do not just lose precious lives in the present, but our future generations also suffer. And this is the result of our bad policies of the past.

At the international level, we are isolated. No one is willing to invest in Pakistan, no one is coming to play sports in Pakistan. All over the world, Pakistan is considered to be an intolerant country — an exporter of terrorism. But why we are failing to control terrorism even though we are spending huge amounts on combating it? It seems as if our law-enforcement agencies are good at everything except at performing their duties. Bureaucrats act like slaves of politicians while politicians cannot do anything independently of the establishment. Blanket accountability is perhaps what is needed in all spheres of life if we want to extricate ourselves from this mess.
