The menace of corruption

Letter December 01, 2014
When corruption begins to plague matters of faith, it gives rise to terrorism and sectarianism

ISLAMABAD: Corruption in any shape, form or kind gives birth to social, moral, economic and religious malpractices. Once corruption creeps into society, it perpetuates a class divide and manifests itself in unethical practices. Corruption in the economy makes the poor, poorer and the rich, richer. When corruption begins to plague matters of faith, it gives rise to terrorism and sectarianism. If any individual, nation or society believes that corruption will help them prosper, they are mistaken. Prosperity does not come at the cost of infringing upon other people’s rights. Anything acquired by corrupt means is akin to stealing.

Corruption is one of the chief reasons why the world in general and our society in particular is so polarised along social, political and religious lines. This ongoing vicious cycle must be checked and condemned by various organs of state, society and the government and also shunned by powerful, rich and influential segments. Otherwise, it will lead us nowhere.
