Gender responsive policing

Letter October 11, 2014
I am optimistic that such initiatives will bring about betterment in our policing services in the long run

ISLAMABAD: One thing that has been a perennial problem in the way the police operate in the country is the lack of gender sensitivity displayed by police officials at all levels. In this regard, a recently launched programme to correct this long-standing problem, which is being jointly implemented by the National Police Bureau of Pakistan and the German Agency for International Cooperation, is welcome indeed. The programme, called the Gender Responsive Policing Project, aims to introduce and develop international policing standards within the various police forces of the country. Its key goal is to improve the police’s effectiveness and efficiency, and foster gender-responsive policing in order to foster sustainable peace in society.

Like many others, I am optimistic that such initiatives will bring about betterment in our policing services in the long run. It is the effect of such activities that all provinces — especifically Sindh — have planned to increase the number of female officers in their police departments, which is welcome indeed.
