Without power

Letter October 08, 2014
When the electricity disappears for several hours — as it did today — then all I can do is wait for it to come back

KARACHI: As I write this — on my mobile phone — I have had no electricity for more than seven hours. To make matters worse, the gas supply has been giving us trouble. On top of that, we live in an area which suffers from chronic water shortages. And no, I don’t live in a remote area of Pakistan, but in its largest city and its financial centre — Karachi.

I am a student of a university where I have to submit various assignments on a daily basis. However, when the electricity disappears for several hours — as it did today — then all I can do is wait for it to come back, and if it doesn’t, then my studies are adversely affected. K-Electric has announced that during the Eidul Azha holidays, there would be no load-shedding, but it did not live up to this claim.
