Pollution of words

Letter October 03, 2014
I appeal to all our political leaders and ordinary citizens to kindly choose their words wisely

KASHMORE: Nowadays, everyone is complaining about pollution and its terrible effects on the environment. Water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, are all on the rise. They have also adversely affected human health. But there is another form of pollution that is growing, generally in the world, and particularly in Pakistan — pollution of words. Use of civilised and appropriate words during conversations and public speeches is a basic principle of effective communication and ethics. But in our country, this seems to be an alien concept, especially when it comes to how our political leaders behave. They often use unethical and offensive words in their speeches, in talk shows and in public gatherings.

Social media is another forum where public figures are now in the habit of sharing inflammatory tweets and messages. This is not how leaders of civilised nations behave. Therefore, I appeal to all our political leaders and ordinary citizens to kindly choose their words wisely.
