Zulqarnain Haider’s actions

Letter November 13, 2010
The matter at hand is the mysterious manner in which he left the national cricket team and went to another country.

ISLAMABAD: In her defence of Zulqarnain Haider, Ayesha Ijaz Khan (“Zulqarnain deserves our support, not our taunts”, November 13) has supported the missing sportsman in a manner which raises a plethora of questions. The writer commends the performance of the wicketkeeper in winning the fourth ODI against South Africa. However, the cricketer’s on-field performance is not the issue.

The matter at hand is the mysterious manner in which he left the national cricket team and went to another country. This has been made worse by his ambiguity and vagueness regarding the circumstances that led to his sudden exit and departure to the UK. He has yet to give any names of the people who, he alleges, wanted him to under-perform in matches and the only reason that one can think of as justifying his actions is that he perhaps wanted to seek asylum in Britain.

If he is privy to information which will expose bookies and other people involved in illegal betting and match-fixing then he should share it.
