Road infrastructure

Letter September 11, 2014
Soon after construction gaping holes appear on roads making them impassable and dangerous.

ISLAMABAD: Doubtless, infrastructure is one of the most fundamental elements of development but unfortunately it has been always overlooked by our successive rulers. Properly developed roads are severely lacking in my home province of Sindh, particularly my home district of Larkana.

Rural roads that do exist are often built with substandard material and are poorly maintained. They are badly destroyed in the rainy season and are completely washed away by man-made disasters such as floods caused by corrupt irrigation officers and engineers. Soon after construction gaping holes appear on roads making them impassable and dangerous. One must visit and inspect the plight of roads in my home district of Larkana, especially the VIP road which was built during the rule of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and is now in a very bad condition.

When roads are in dilapidated condition children have difficulty attending schools, pregnant women cannot reach hospitals in town and farmers have no access to larger markets. It also means that delivery of food, medical care and other supplies to people becomes a logistical nightmare.
