Why should I care?

Letter September 08, 2014
As far as I am living a comfortable life, why should I care if the poor don’t get food to eat, clean water to drink.

OKARA: I was born into a family that wanted me to study that’s why I decided to get admission to a private school. After completing my school, I had an option to continue studies from a private college or a university in Pakistan or go abroad. I decided to complete college education from a private institution locally and later I went abroad to study further in a university. I came back and got sick due to contaminated drinking water. I managed to get treated at a private hospital and started drinking filtered/mineral water to prevent any future illnesses.

Meanwhile, Pakistan faced electricity crisis so I decided to purchase a UPS. The crisis got worse so I bought a generator which malfunctioned so I bought another, more powerful one to replace it. Whenever I don’t like what is cooked at my house, I dine out. In one year, I make at least two international trips. If I don’t like the behaviour of my boss or if my work load increases, I switch my job because I have degrees from a prestigious college and university. I’m living a comfortable life! And as far as I am living a comfortable life, why should I care if the poor don’t get food to eat, clean water to drink, have no access to education and healthcare? Oh and yes, once I got robbed but the police helped me. Who cares if a poor gets killed and the police don’t listen to him?

Did I hear someone saying we have problems in Pakistan?
