Politicisation of institutions

Letter August 31, 2014
Politicisation of govt institutions is taking its toll in shape of hardships to common people

KARACHI: Politicisation of government institutions, such as the police, the election commission, accountability organisations, is taking its toll in the shape of hardships to the common people by reducing the effectiveness of such institutions. The Model Town incident in Lahore in which 14 people died and about 90 suffered injuries has left a dark scar on the face of democracy and has been widely criticised.

If the head of an accountability organisation is selected by politicians from the ruling and opposition parties, it would be a bit much to expect that person — usually a bureaucrat — to hold his politician bosses accountable. Therefore, the accountability of politicians will strengthen democracy, help reform the system and weed out corruption.
