Child abuse

Letter November 10, 2010
I wonder why our clerics do not recite in their sermons verses from the Holy Quran from Surah 26 Ash-Shu'ara.

ISLAMABAD: The alarming increase in the number of children sexually abused in Pakistan is grossly understated in your report of November 8. It quotes statistics, which say that seven of the cases involved maulvis — out of a total of 1,976 such cases.

During my posting in the federal ministry of religious affairs, many a knowledgeable person privately confided in me and revealed the rampant practice of sodomy whereby innocent boys were sexually abused, mostly by migrant ‘maulvis’ coming from other cities to impart religious education to the children of poor families.

I wonder why our clerics do not recite in their sermons verses from the Holy Quran from Surah 26 Ash-Shu'ara which narrate how people of Prophet Lut, living in the town of Sodom who indulged in sodomy and were destroyed by the wrath of Allah when they refused to pay heed to the warnings of their Prophet.
