Political victimization (II)

Letter November 10, 2010
What happened to Marvi Memon was because she is a woman.

KARACHI: What happened to Marvi Memon was because she is a woman. The fact that she is an MNA, a respected senator’s daughter who works hard for the people she represents, is of no importance — what only matters is one’s gender. This is because Pakistan is a deeply misogynistic society. It is a society where gang-rape of a woman is given as a verdict by a jirga and where hundreds of girls and women die every year because of karo-kari. Ms Memon should try and imagine what millions of ordinary women have to endure in a country like Pakistan. Even in a place as affluent as DHA in Karachi, women cannot walk safely on the roads.
