To get out of the mess we are in, we need to inculcate a feeling of nationhood and pride in ourselves.
KARACHI: This is with reference to Zahrah Nasir's piece “Death wish” (November 9). The writer has called upon educated people to act and this will not happen. As a people, we are individualistic in thought and we think and act for ourselves, not for the collective good. Sadly, we take pride in this and justify it as an illustration of the dictum ‘survival of the fittest’.
To get out of the mess we are in, we need to inculcate a feeling of nationhood and pride in ourselves. The other unfortunate thing is that those who can do something have developed a system whereby they use this country and its resources for personal gain. They keep their wealth outside the country and usually have dual citizenship for an easy exit. Those whom the writer is calling upon to fix the problem are, in fact, part of the problem.
