A rising middle class

Letter November 09, 2010
These are the people who come from the rural areas to earn a living in the cities.

ISLAMABAD: I write in response to Rasul Baksh Rais's article of November 8 titled “A rising rural middle class”.

The ground realities (if one happens to live in places like Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa or the Tribal Areas) are very different, where a labourer earns about Rs150-200 per day. These are the people who come from the rural areas to earn a living in the cities. Had there been any rural revolution taking place in their hometowns, why would they even bother coming to cities and sleep on the roadsides and be treated like animals?

There is a huge gap in the living standards of various parts of the Islamic republic of Pakistan and the fact that nobody cares.
