Soldier’s gun at minister's car (II)

Letter November 09, 2010
The army belongs to the barracks and it should stay there.

CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA: If India, with its one billion-plus people, dozens of languages, castes and sects can successfully nurture democracy, why can’t we. The army belongs to the barracks and it should stay there. Whatever one thinks of the current lot of politicians, one must ensure that the army does not interfere in the running of the government and plot conspiracies to topple an elected government.

The question to ask ourselves is: could a traffic constable ever stop even a colonel at a checkpost let alone a brigadier or a general? If that is not possible then the army also has no right to stop a member of the federal cabinet. It is about rule, equality and fair play.
