Attacks on women in Balochistan

Letter August 04, 2014
Extremist not only target and kill Hazaras, Zikris and shut schools, they have also started to attack women with acid.

TURBAT: Respect for women has always been a part of Baloch history, tradition and culture. However, a new extremist group called Tanzeem-ul-Islam-ul-Furqan has recently raised its sinister head in Balochistan and has started to wreak havoc on women. These extremist not only target and kill Hazaras, the Zikris and shut down schools, they have also started to attack women with acid.

During the last three weeks, dozens of women in Balochistan have been attacked and several schools have been shut down in the Panjgur and Makuran area. Students and teachers have also been attacked. Moreover, the Baloch nationalists believe that the attacks on women by the extremists is meant to weaken the Baloch nationalist movements in which both men and women are playing a vital role for their rights.

It is lamentable that women in Balochistan are being targeted thus. The federal government needs to catch those behind the attacks.
