Operation Zarb-e-Azb and Afghanistan

Letter August 03, 2014
Regrettably, cross-border attacks from the Afghan side on Pakistani territory are a regular feature.

READING, UK: There is a saying that even the most pious of persons can’t live peacefully if his neighbour does not allow him peace of mind. This seems to be a pretty good description of the situation that exists currently between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Even during the Eid holidays a cross-border attack took place from the Afghan side of the border on a Pakistani military outpost. Regrettably, cross-border attacks from the Afghan side on Pakistani territory are a regular feature and it seems that the US-trained and equipped Afghan National Army does nothing to prevent this from happening.

History would suggest that the Afghans are not going to accept a stooge government installed by the US and Nato in Kabul. Already, fighting between the stooges has begun, on the issue of the disputed result of the presidential election, but this is only the beginning. This is only one danger that is threatening the success of Zarb-e-Azb. The other is that after the military clean-up is complete the civilian government will have to resume control of the region and will have to follow the operation with good governance.
