KARACHI: Increasingly, despite its military and political strength, Israel’s wanton destruction of Palestine is losing support. Astonishingly, as an occupier and settler, it is still in search of recognition. Over the years, America’s financial and military aid, and immunity from the sanction of international law, has done nothing for the Israeli cause. Without veto support, Israel cannot continue its occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights, or its siege of Gaza. In such a dependent state, how can someone think to dominate the region? Or think about ‘Greater Israel’?
The biggest problem for Israel is the loss of support in civil society in Western countries. From France to Chile, protests against Israeli aggression in Gaza have been organised and attended by people in good number. The Brazilian government has recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv and condemned Israel’s aggression. Chile has cut ties with Israel. Venezuela has condemned Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Despite a ban, thousands of people came out on the streets to protest against Israel. Even within Israel, the support for such actions is on the decline. Around 50 Israeli soldiers have refused to serve saying that they don’t agree with what is happening in Gaza right now.
On Twitter, the hash tag #GazaUnderAttack has been used in more than four million tweets, compared to 200,000 for #IsraelUnderFire.
