Malpractice in the KMC

Letter June 11, 2014
KMC should make it mandatory for UCs to display official fee structure for all services prominently in their offices.

KARACHI: It is a pity that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which administers the city’s 18 towns and their respective union councils, does not even have a functioning telephone helpline.

The KMC staff simply hung up the phone when I called the official helpline to complain about Gulshan Town (UC-13) clerks who I had to bribe in order to get my computerised nikahnama, a requirement for renewing one’s Computerised National Identity Card.

Instead of telling me the official processing fee, clerks at the UC-13 office kept negotiating the ‘rate’ with me. Finally, I had to pay Rs1,000 to get something that is my right as a tax-paying citizen.

Later on, the KMC staff rudely told me off when I tried to register a complaint through its official helpline.

The KMC should make it mandatory for UCs to display the official fee structure for all services prominently in their offices. Also all calls to its official helpline should be recorded to ensure that KMC staff addresses complaints in an appropriate manner.
