Protecting the environment

Letter June 03, 2014
We need to understand the importance of environmental conservation to maintain healthy ecosystems.

KARACHI: It seems like today there is no one in our country who cares about the environment. People have so many other problems to think of, that they are losing sight of the dangerous environmental issues we face. Today, our country’s air, water and soil are all under constant assault, and if that was not bad enough, we have now developed a habit of living with this pollution around us. Looking at the rest of the world, we have also started lip service about ‘going green’ for the environment but in reality, we have done nothing to spread awareness about important environmental problems. Government, media and environmental agencies all seem to have neglected the importance of awareness of the conservation of nature and resident species. Today, we all need to wake up in a big hurry, before it is too late to restore what we have destroyed. We are recklessly destroying our environment by cutting trees and plants and by throwing polluted water from industries and sewerage systems into our fresh water reserves. Air pollution is growing every day from heavy traffic on the roads. This pollution is responsible for global warming and also introduces heavy metals into the air, which are deadly for not only us, but for all other forms of life.

We need to realise that we have been careless towards nature and we need to understand the importance of environmental conservation to save all forms of life and to maintain healthy ecosystems.

The first step should be the inculcation of information and awareness in people’s minds about environmental issues and why conservation is important. Media campaigns can help a lot in this regard. In short, there are many things we can do to help salvage the situation.
