KARACHI: The dangerous disease of measles has affected the Sindh province again. This time, the disease has surfaced its ugly head in the coastal districts of Sujawal and Thatta. If not contained early, it can easily spread to other parts of the province and even to other provinces of Pakistan. The government of Sindh has finally woken up and launched an emergency vaccination programme spanning the whole province from May 19 to May 31, 2014. All children aged between six months to 10 years are to be vaccinated according to this programme. Even if 80-90 per cent vaccination coverage is achieved, the epidemic can be contained so that it does not spread to other parts of the province and country. It is also the responsibility of the community to participate actively in this campaign. Our ulema and teachers can be of much help in this regard. Mobile phone companies can also circulate messages through their networks to make this campaign a success. If we all contribute to this noble cause, the devil of measles can easily be sealed back into the bottle.
