The current token system may have been productive if we had separate bus lanes.
KARACHI: An insightful post-mortem of the existing public transport system of Karachi was published in The Express Tribune (May 22) showing that time is indeed money for our bus drivers. It is also important to share that the most fatal road accidents are due to this transport system, where punctuality is preferred to killing pedestrians and crushing vehicles.
The current token system may have been productive if we had separate bus lanes. However, Karachi is far from this today. In the current situation, in order to streamline the steady traffic of buses, we have to ensure that all buses travel at the same speed to avoid the problem of reaching early or late — thus removing the token system.
All buses should be immediately overhauled with a simple mechanical change of creating blockage in the clutch and the race which will limit and maintain the maximum bus speed. This reduction in speed will result in fewer fatal accidents as the bus driver will be unable to drive chaotically in order to reach the next time-keeping point.
