Congratulations, Pakistan

Letter May 24, 2014
I would like to assert, through this letter, than many Pakistanis are not at all happy with the BJP’s victory.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to the article by Shivam Vij, “Congratulations, Pakistan” published on May 23. The writer seems to have taken offence from the opinions of another writer who, in his article, stated that the election of Mr Modi in India vindicates Jinnah.

I would like to assert, through this letter, than many Pakistanis are not at all happy with the BJP’s victory. They are, in fact, very much worried. The headline, “Modi elected, Jinnah vindicated” is clearly not for Indians to stomach. It is, in fact, a simple rebuttal to the liberals and socialists in our country who are always doubting whether the creation of Pakistan was a good idea or whether it was a ploy to satisfy the ego of the Quaid-e-Azam, as is claimed by the majority of Indian Hindus. As far as the ‘vindication’ of Mr Jinnah is concerned, might I point out that he was vindicated immediately after Partition when Hindus and Sikhs started killing Muslims and forcing them to migrate. He was vindicated when India blocked all the assets and financial shares of Pakistan. He was vindicated when India forcibly took over Junagarh and Hyderabad. He was also vindicated when India landed her forces in Kashmir, made the Muslim population its captive, and continued to do so even after it had given a solid pledge in the UN to allow the Kashmiris to decide their own future through a plebiscite.

No, sir, Nehru and Gandhi were as much against the interests of Muslims as the BJP is. It was during the reign of the Congress that India made Hindi the state language, pushing Urdu to the back stage.

Our hearts do bleed at the plight of Indian Muslims, but we can only give them moral support and hope that the Indian government will honour its claim and treat all Indians equally.
