Rising street crime

Letter May 22, 2014
Last week, a few of my relatives got robbed while visiting a graveyard. Gunmen looted their valuables.

KARACHI: Through your newspaper, I, a citizen of Karachi, wish to draw the attention of relevant authorities to an extremely agonising problem prevailing in our city. Due to inflation, the cost of living is soaring and the common man is finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. As the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, the rate of crime is rising. Street crime in Karachi has reached alarming levels. People who use public transport are the main target of such criminal activities.

Due to this insecurity, people are reluctant to frequent public places such as malls, parks and restaurants. Last week, a few of my relatives got robbed while visiting a graveyard. Gunmen looted their valuables.

There have been reports that many of the students of my university were looted on their way home. In fact, some of my friends’ belongings were stolen when they were near the university premises — despite the heavy security. Students studying in the evening programme are more vulnerable to street crime.

The higher authorities should take serious actions to eliminate lawlessness in the city. Parents should take out time, sit with their children and make them aware of the negative effects of these crimes. Black sheep within the police force should be detected, rooted out and efforts should be made to overhaul the police system so that criminals are punished duly.
