Expensive milk

Letter May 18, 2014
Despite government’s claims, in different areas of Karachi milk is being sold at Rs80 to Rs84 a litre.

KARACHI: In our society, there is a huge population of workers who work hard to fulfill their children’s basic needs. But the continuously rising cost of daily necessities has outstripped the nominal raise that they receive, which has made it impossible for them to make ends meet, even if they are striving to do so day and night.

Of late, milk sellers have increased the price of milk in order to gain more profit. In different areas of the city, milk is being sold at Rs80 to Rs84 a litre. Although the government claims that it is keeping a check on the price at which milk should be sold — which is Rs70 a litre — there is no implementation. The milk sellers are taking advantage of the government’s laxity.

Although the price of petrol has decreased, the present rate of milk and yoghurt continues to pose a challenge to a sizeable group of people. These essentials are necessary for people of all age groups, particularly infants and children of a growing age. I request the authorities concerned to keep a check on the prices of these basic necessaries. This measure will go a long way in improving the health standards of the country.
