Security at universities

Letter May 16, 2014
Incidents of crime at universities should be highlighted in the media in a responsible way.

KARACHI: After a rape case at a prominent university a few weeks ago, a girl was allegedly kidnapped inside the university premises last week. Cars with tinted glasses had been seen in the university and some people — who are known to follow girls and harass them across campus — were seen to have led them on the premises.

Most public universities are sprawled across large tracts of land with department buildings in each and every corner. Parents send their children to universities where they can study and build a bright future — but it seems that some universities have recently been in the news for all the wrong reasons, which is marring their reputation. I have seen a couple of letters in different newspapers about this very issue but it is really shocking to note that no news channels are reporting these stories.

One fails to understand why our media is being so secretive about these incidents. Incidents of crime at universities should be highlighted in the media in a responsible way so that culprits can be apprehended.

I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned to this crucial issue and increase security at public universities as whole. The security staff at universities should be more strict about soliciting national identity cards of car drivers on each gate and returning it upon departure after checking the car — regardless of whether the car has a formal gate pass or not.
