Sindh government must ensure that more resources are allocated under the rural water supply and sanitation programme.
ISLAMABAD: Like many others, I note with concern the chronically poor water supply and sanitation services in the urban, semi-rural and the remotest regions of the otherwise — resource-rich home province of Sindh — be it Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Rohri, Larkana Jacobabad, Kandhkot, etc. It is reported that lack of sanitation services has led to an endemic outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
The PPP-led Sindh government, therefore, should introduce water, sanitation and sewerage grants to utility companies to enable them to maintain and upgrade water and sewerage infrastructure in the province.
Moreover, the provincial government must ensure that more resources are allocated under the rural water supply and sanitation programme to local authorities. To provide people with a source of income, the government should undertake and promote the development of infrastructure projects using labour-intensive techniques.
