Imperatives of good governance

Letter May 12, 2014
The time has come to move forward together with our united strength.

ISLAMABAD: Like many students of political science and law, I have read in various books that sustainable people-friendly economic policies and effective delivery of social services are one of the salient imperatives of good governance. But whenever one reflects on the policies of the past regimes, both, federal and provincial, one comes to the conclusion that those rulers did not put pragmatic efforts in practice to resuscitate the economy and improve on the delivery of social services.

Our rulers in the federal and provincial governments are bound together by the promises they have made to their voters. Our rulers must remain committed to that lofty and achievable purpose to improve the quality of life and to achieve this, the administrative machinery must be equipped with noble virtues such as honesty, strong character, generosity and professionalism that seek to modernise Pakistan consistent with global trends. Indeed, the task ahead is difficult but with vision, passion and determination, we can take Pakistan to new horizons of peace, progress and prosperity. The time has come to move forward together with our united strength.
