Militancy in Nigeria

Letter May 03, 2014
It is the state’s responsibility to bring rouge elements to justice and stop the blood bath.

SHIKARPUR: Terrorism is simultaneously spreading in all corners of the world. In recent months, Nigeria has been under the spotlight. The Boko Haram militant group in Nigeria kidnapped roughly 200 boarding girls last month, who have not been released yet. There is worrying speculation that they have been forcefully married to the militants who kidnapped them. Meanwhile, there was a car bomb attack in Abuja this week which has killed at least 19 people and wounded scores of other civilians. According to these militant groups, their manifesto is to eliminate the influence of the West and battle the Western culture in their region.

It is also of no surprise that the Nigerian government has failed to stop the chaotic and heinous practices of this extremist group — which can be hard to contain. However, it is the state’s responsibility to bring these rouge elements to justice and stop the blood bath. Needless to say, there is an important lesson here for Pakistan as well.
